A resident of Zelenodolsk (Tatarstan). According to his own account, from 27 February 2022 he participated in pickets holding a poster stating that the Fatherland was in danger. On 14 March, he was fined 15,000 rubles for this picket under the article on discrediting the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Article 20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offences).

Bogdanov claims that he corresponded with someone in Ukraine and asked how he could move there.

On 6 September 2022, Bogdanov was taken into custody in connection with a case concerning property damage by arson. While in pre-trial detention, he reported that he was not receiving medical care. He has hypertension but has been unable to obtain a blood pressure monitor. Additionally, he requires the removal of temporary titanium implants in his arm and leg, but has been unable to see a surgeon, and his arm is now almost immobile.

On 1 March 2023, Bogdanov’s preventive measure was changed to a restriction on certain actions. At that time, it also became known that he was charged in a case concerning the discrediting of the Armed Forces. The combined case was submitted to the court, but on 17 November 2023 it was returned to the prosecutor’s office. In December, the case was resubmitted to the court.

On 20 June 2024, the case was suspended, as the court record indicated that “the defendant had absconded.” On 4 July, it became known that Bogdanov was placed on a wanted list. As he later explained in a letter to Mediazona, he had gone into the wild, but on 31 October he was detained. The case was resumed. On 8 November 2024, Bogdanov was sentenced to four and a half years’ imprisonment in a general-regime penal colony.

Additionally, in February 2024 he received a suspended sentence of two years in connection with a case concerning the use of violence against a police officer. We have no grounds to consider this prosecution politically motivated.

On 5 November 2025, the appellate court reduced Bogdanov’s sentence due to a change in the legal qualification of the charges; the details of the decision are unknown.

How to write the letter?

Getting started
What can I write about?
On censorship: what can’t I write?
Is it allowed to send photographs?
What language do I use in my letter?
What are the limits on sending letters?
Should I expect a reply and do I have to respond?
How do I maintain the correspondence?
I would like to send letters by myself, how do I do it?
How else can I support Russian dissidents?
It says that the prisoner I was assigned was tried for terrorism, or extremism or something else scary, what’s up with that?
