On 24 January 2023, the Federal Security Service (FSB) officers conducted searches in several villages in the Dzhankoy district of Crimea, targeting Crimean Tatars. As a result, six individuals, including Refat Seidametov, were detained and transferred to Simferopol. The following day, a court placed all six in pre-trial detention on charges of participation in the activities of a terrorist organization and preparing for the violent seizure of power, due to their involvement in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has not been associated with any acts of violence.

At the hearing on pre-trial detention measures, lawyers who wished to assist the detainees were not allowed to attend because they were already representing other defendants in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case. Residents gathered outside the courthouse in support of the detainees, and police detained more than 30 people.

On August 22, 2023, the case was assigned to the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don.

On April 29, 2025, Seidametov was sentenced to 14 years in a strict-regime penal colony.

How to write the letter?

Getting started
What can I write about?
On censorship: what can’t I write?
Is it allowed to send photographs?
What language do I use in my letter?
What are the limits on sending letters?
Should I expect a reply and do I have to respond?
How do I maintain the correspondence?
I would like to send letters by myself, how do I do it?
How else can I support Russian dissidents?
It says that the prisoner I was assigned was tried for terrorism, or extremism or something else scary, what’s up with that?
